Toledo, 21 March 2023 – GLP, the global business builder in logistics, digital infrastructure, renewable energy and related technologies, announces what will be the largest building across its Spanish portfolio. GLP has closed an agreement with the Spanish subsidiary of the Auchan group, Alcampo, for the development of a 98,500 SQM macro logistics platform.

Located within Magna Park Tauro logistics park in Illescas, Toledo, the project will be Alcampo’s main logistics distribution centre in the Iberian Peninsula. It will also facilitate the process of further regional industrial rehabilitation, providing value to the municipality and wider community.

This asset will accompany the recently completed 35,000 SQM blank project in Magna Park Tauro, which GLP has put on the market for lease in conjunction with a future building for 2024, when the park is due to be finalised.

During the official ceremony marking the laying of the first stone, local and regional authorities, as well as representatives of both companies, highlighted the value of the project. Built to turnkey on a 183,000 SQM plot of land, the warehouse will increase Magna Park Tauro’s total area to 286,000 SQM.

Standing at a clear height of 12.2 meters with 8 tonnes of racking, the new warehouse will benefit from strong energy efficiency and operational performance, in addition to specific temperature-controlled areas. The facility has BREEAM Very Good certification and has the necessary infrastructure to establish a photovoltaic plant for clean power generation on the roof.

Óscar Heras, Director of GLP Spain, remarked: “We are proud of the agreement that GLP has reached with Alcampo for the construction of one of the largest and most efficient distribution platforms in Spain. The operation has overcome challenges due to the complexity of the property, but thanks to the great collaboration between the Alcampo and GLP teams and the unconditional support of the municipal and regional governments, it has been possible to turn it into a reality.”

Raimundo Gonzalo, Alcampo’s Supply Chain Director commented: “The Illescas platform will represent the clear evolution and commitment to the development of our company. For it is the people and professionals who, with rigour, make this work possible”.

Also highlighting the technological potential of the warehouse, Gonzalo emphasised that it will be equipped with “two sorters with a capacity for 12,000 boxes per hour, doubling our current capacity and incorporating AMR solutions that will transport more than 200,000 KM per year in the internal part of the platform. With this, Alcampo is building a high-specification warehouse that will be an example of logistics excellence.”

Manuel Tofiño, the Mayor of Illescas, emphasised the pride that Illescas feels around this event, noting that this is already the third project he has celebrated with GLP. Mayor Tofiño remarked: “This is a new event that inaugurates a project of significant magnitude and which highlights the fact that Illescas is already the Spanish logistics hub of reference”.

Patricia Franco, Minister of Economy, Enterprise and Employment of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, closed the event, emphasising the positioning of Illescas. Patricia Franco stated: “Logistics has always been at the heart of this area, with its capabilities and conditions, but it is collaboration and commitment to growth that has made Illescas an important pole in the development of logistics within our region. The sector currently employs more than 50,000 people in the region, having generated more than 15,000 jobs in Castilla-La Mancha since our arrival to the Government in 2015, one third of them in the province of Toledo.”

The operation has been advised by CBRE, who also manage the commercialisation of the whole of Magna Park Tauro.
