Frankfurt, Germany, 12 December 2024 – GLP, a leading global business builder, owner, developer, and operator of logistics real estate, digital infrastructure, renewable energy, and related technologies, announces that GLP Clean Energy, its renewable energy business in Europe, has begun the installation process of a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system at Unit II of GLP’s logistics centre in Mönchengladbach, in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region.
The solar PV plant will initially have a total solar PV capacity of 3.8 MW, supplying the equivalent of 784 German households. The plant will be equipped with 9,432 solar modules, the total area of which is equivalent to the size of three football fields. The facility’s tenants will all have access to the sustainable power produced by the PV system without any investment required by them and at a discount compared to the utility rate.
Meanwhile, surplus power will be fed into the local energy grid, offering the community a dependable supply of sustainable electricity. With around 400 new solar modules being installed each day by 30 fitters, the next step to mount and align the panels on the roof of Unit II is expected to be completed by Christmas.
Originally built in 2010 (Mönchengladbach Unit I) and 2017 (Mönchengladbach Unit II), GLP has retrofitted the facility with a range of sustainability features to increase efficiency and provide real benefits to new customers. These include an LED lighting system, smart metering, cycle storage, a G-Hive bee hotel, and an existing BREEAM in Use ‘Very Good Certificate’. In the near future, the site will also include EV charging points capabilities.
Strategically located within the Regiopark industrial estate, in the well-connected Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, GLP’s logistics centre in Mönchengladbach offers excellent links to the international transport network, including direct access to the A61 motorway. The site also provides connections to a well-developed rail network, international airports, and multiple inland ports along the Rhine, ensuring efficient accessibility to rapid distribution channels.
Stefano Fissolo, Senior Director, GLP Clean Energy, said: “The integration of renewable energy solutions like the solar PV plant at Mönchengladbach has become an essential component of modern logistics facilities. Onsite solar is the perfect solution for the so-called energy trilemma: it is affordable, allowing tenants to make savings on their electricity bills, it is sustainable because it comes from the sun and does not use farmland, and it is secured because it allows tenants to fix prices in the mid to long term, in times of volatility of energy markets.”
Marie Luise von Knobloch-Keil, Head of Asset Management, GLP Germany, said: “We are proud to offer our clients access to high-quality facilities in prime locations that allow them to achieve significant competitive advantages. The addition of the solar PV system at Mönchengladbach is a milestone in the evolution of our logistics offering to customers in Germany, and we look forward to commencing energy production at the plant”.
